ETSPJ board member shares fight against breast cancer

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (ETSPJ) — October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

In order to raise awareness for the importance of early detection, the Knoxville News Sentinel shared stories from cancer survivors in the Knoxville-area. East Tennessee Society of Professional Journalists board member Maria Cornelius shared her story.

Cornelius said she underwent a double mastectomy at age 50 after a lump was found in her breast. She credits early detection with saving her life.

“I remember very well the day I left the hospital after double mastectomy surgery because I went straight to Pat Summitt’s house,” Cornelius told the Knoxville News Sentinel.
