Longtime ETSPJ member Herb Howard is going to celebrate his 85th birthday with a cake and a professorship named for him. Howard has been an SPJ member since March 1, 1966.
The Herb Howard Distinguished Professorship in Media Management and Law will be established at the University of Tennessee College of Communication and Information through a $1 million gift by alumnus Larry Patrick. Howard, a professor emeritus at of the School of Journalism and Electronic Media, taught courses in broadcasting, journalism and communications research. He also served as the college’s associate dean graduate studies for research.
“I have to give credit to Larry Patrick, Chancellor Jimmy Cheek and Dean Mike Wirth,” Howard said. “It’s a very great honor for me, I hope I deserve all of that.”
Howard became noted for his academic work on television station ownership and management, and served as a research consultant for the National Association of Broadcasters.
A native of Johnson City, Tenn., Howard started his career in high school as an announcer for radio station WJHL and later became the program director and the station’s first weatherman.
“My desire to honor Herb Howard reflects his lifetime of service to the university, and serves as a thanks from one of the many students who benefited by having Dr. Howard as a teacher,” Patrick said. Patrick is the managing partner of Patrick Communications LLC, a media brokerage firm based in Maryland.
At some point in the future, this $1 million gift will be combined with Patrick’s $5 million estate gift to replace the distinguished professorship with an endowed chair, also honoring Howard.
