GENERAL REPORTING (Digital Only)
First Place
Contestant Name: Tennessee Lookout
Entry Title: OSHA officials admit to shredding documents in Tennessee Valley Authority coal ash case
Entry Credit: Jamie Satterfield
Links: See entry
Judge Comments: Unsettling report that OSHA shredded documents related to the coal ash disaster (with levels of radioactivity) in 2009, indicating it was OK for the agency to do so. The whole situation leads one to question whether anyone was going to hold the TVA and federal agencies feet to the fire in this case. There is debate about whether the cleanup workers were adequately protected. Fifty-four workers are dead, even more are sick and a big lawsuit hangs over. Who was protecting whom?
GENERAL REPORTING (Digital Only)
Second Place
Contestant Name: Teknovation.biz
Entry Title: Who run the world? The Oak Ridge Computer Science Girls
Entry Credit: Shannon Smith
Links: See entry
Judge Comments: Solid feature on the Oak Ridge Computer Science Girls. The class for middle-school girls has expanded nationwide and boosted the skills of 1,100 girls, some of whom have gotten into MIT.
SPORTS REPORTING (Digital Only)
First Place
Contestant Name: Knox TN Today
Entry Title: Napkin sketch led to Lady Vols logo
Entry Credit: Maria Cornelius
Links: See entry
Judge Comments: Nice piece about the creation of the Lady Vols’ logo. Top women’s sports officials, including Pat Summit, create the women’s logo at a Cumberland Avenue restaurant. A hollowed-out T with Lady Vols on it. Volettes didn’t make the cut. Nice piece of University of Tennessee history.
SPORTS REPORTING (Digital Only)
Second Place
Contestant Name: 247Sports Tennessee
Entry Title: Soccer player Nyla Blue, daughter of Lady Vol hooper, commits to Tennessee
Entry Credit: Maria Cornelius
Links: See entry
Judge Comments: Like mother, but sort of not like daughter. Nyla Blue commits to the University of Tennessee, where her mom starred as point guard. Except the daughter will be playing soccer.
