Covering a World in Crisis: A conversation with Doug Schorzman, Deputy International Editor for The New York Times

Schorzman works for the Times’ International Desk, guiding coverage of events including the war in Ukraine, the COVID-19 pandemic, and political and economic disruptions around the globe.

Schorzman started writing at newspapers when he was 15 — graduating from a paper route to covering sports and city council news at his local county weekly — and he’s mostly been happy about that.

After teenage dreams of being a foreign correspondent, the journalism world threw him a slider, and his first big internship (at The Seattle Times) and job after college (at The Salem Statesman Journal in Oregon) were both in the editing ranks.

It stuck, and he’s been mostly happy about that, too. He’s been an editor at The New York Times since the beginning of 2001, mostly as an assignment editor working with conflict zone reporters. After a three-year stint as Deputy Asia Editor at the Times’s news hub in Hong Kong, he came back home to Brooklyn in 2020 as a deputy international editor.
