STUDENT – BEST NEWS COVERAGE (Student Journalism)

First Place
Contestant Name: The Daily Beacon
Entry Title: Housing Crisis
Entry Credit: Daniel Dassow, Abby Ann Ramsey

Judge Comments: An aggressive team-based approach to a pressing campus issue (lack of housing, following a surge in enrollment), led to a lively multimedia package that put the chancellor in the hot chair for a well-conducted one-on-one interview, including a bit of pushback to the administration, plus a collection of stories and photographs that built out the struggles, from a student perspective, of the problem. The team does a good job nationalizing and regionalizing the local story. It might also have considered more of a pushback against the growth is always good mindset that is permeating higher education right now. In other words, did the university miss opportunities to increase quality instead of adding so much quantity?

STUDENT – BEST NEWS COVERAGE (Student Journalism)

Judge Comments: I appreciate the depth and diversity of this collection of stories and how this journalist seems to be giving voice to the voiceless and power to the powerless. The writing and reporting are strong, and the story selection shows promise as a storyteller for the disenfranchised.
